Fall 2016 Wellness Warriors
EASTERN WELLNESS WARRIORS
Student Support Network
Welcome to the Wellness Warriors page! The Wellness Warriors program is a student support network designed to train students and staff to help them become more knowledgeable about mental health, as well as how to support students in need. The goal of the program is to identify and educate students and staff in our community in how to identify, reach out and help other students in distress.
The first part of the program runs for apx. 7 consecutive weeks and covers issues like general mental health, depression and anxiety, suicide prevention, and substance use. The weekly sessions are designed to be interactive and experiential in order to allow participants to learn strategies for providing support to individuals who may be experiencing emotional concerns or who may be at risk regarding suicidal behavior and substance abuse.
Previous Wellness Warrior trainings have expanded. Opportunities for learning and applying knowledge of mental health does not stop there! Wellness Warriors continue on for further training to become Certified Peer Educators through the BACCHUS Initiative of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals. Wellness Warriors will learn the techniques to become para-educators for mental health, developing programs that engage students to improve resiliency and coping strategies for improving mental health.
The Wellness Warriors program culminates with each participant receiving a certificate of training and a hooding ceremony which is conducted by facilitators and previously trained Wellness Warriors.
This program was presented as a pilot during the spring 2014 semester and will continue to be offered each semester. This is a great opportunity for you to learn valuable skills that students and staff can apply directly to their lives and roles at Eastern, and beyond!
Through lively discussion, exercises, and role-plays, the Wellness Warriors aim to improve:
- Knowledge about mental health issues and decrease stigma
- Recognition of signs/symptoms of mental health distress
- Skills and confidence in supporting, reaching out, and referring
