Infant-Toddler Teacher Heather Mulrooney describes how she encourages the emerging pretend play of the toddlers in her care. She plans a play theme based on their daily experiences that is well-matched to their curious nature.  After providing duplicates of realistic props, she and the other adults in her classroom are flexible in allowing children to explore and initiate use of toys throughout the room. They model pretend play while also following the children’s lead.  Support is individualized in order to meet the needs of children at various developmental levels in a classroom with a wide age-range.
