Passports and Visas

A valid passport is required for all Global Field Courses. If you don’t have one, please, obtain one. For additional information necessary in applying or renewing a U.S. passport:

Be sure and check your expiration date on your passport. The expiration date of your passport should be at least six months before the intended date of return travel. If you will be traveling on a foreign passport, contact your country’s nearest consulate or embassy to obtain information on replacing or renewing your passport. For a list of foreign embassies and consulates in the US:

In some cases U.S. citizens may be required to obtain a visa to travel to a Global Field Course destination. Please, contact the embassy of that country for directions.

Global Field Course participants traveling on passports issued by countries other than the U.S. are responsible for determining if a visa is required for their destination and applying in a timely manner for that visa.

For Safety Sake
Always confer with your Global Field Course professor and/or guide.

Make two sets of photocopies of your passport, plane ticket, credit card numbers, prescriptions, and other vital documents. Take one set of copies with you and keep separate from the originals. Leave the other set in the US.

Carry two extra passport pictures separately from your passport, a copy of your passport, and a certified copy (not the original) of your birth certificate or an expired passport.

If the passport is lost, report the loss to the local police, get written confirmation of the police report, and take your above documents to the nearest U.S. consulate and apply for a new passport.

Health and Safety

Medical Concerns – Students
The University requires all students participating in Global Field Course to be covered by appropriate medical insurance. During the pre-departure orientation, students are directed to contact their insurance provider to determine the carrier’s provisions for care overseas and the procedures to be followed should medical treatment become necessary. Students are required to furnish the name of their health insurance company on the Health Information/Emergency Contact form. Faculty should have copies of this information with them during the course of the study tour.

**Students must provide evidence of medical insurance that includes medical evacuation and repatriation of remains coverage.

Students are advised to review their Eastern Student Medical Policy for coverage while on the GFC. In addition to the required medical insurance, all students participating in course abroad programs are required to enroll in supplementary medical evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance, with minimum coverage levels of $50,000 and $25,000 respectively.

Cancellation by Eastern due to Safety Concerns
The Vice President for Academic Affairs in consultation with the appropriate dean and faculty member may decide to either re-route or cancel a Global Field Course program if an international destination location is determined to be unsafe for student and faculty travel. Resources to be used in monitoring situations and formulating recommendations include the Consular Information Sheets, Travel Advisories and Travel Warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State, newspaper reports, and independent travel advisory companies.

If Eastern cancels a program because of safety concerns, students will be provided a full refund of all travel and course fees paid and any cancellation penalties imposed by travel service providers will be absorbed by the University.

What is our goal?
Our goal is to promote a broader world view for students that includes an understanding and appreciation of diversity and knowledge of other cultures.

How could you benefit from the program?
W.H. Auden 20th-century English poet said, “Civilization should be measured by the degree of diversity attained and the degree of unity retained”. We at GFC believe that being exposed to various cultures can be of tremendous benefit to all the students who engage in this program. An international experience provides greater personal marketing capabilities for the student seeking employment, and gives them exposure to different styles of academic instruction and training.

It provides you the opportunity to experience the lifestyle and other cultural practices outside of your comfort zone.
