Professional Human Resource Program
Human Resource Managers can get the competitive edge as Eastern partners with SHRM®. The SHRM® Learning System, a twelve-week certificate program, is valuable for people in the human resource field and for people interested in entering the Human Resource field.
SHRM® educational products are developed according to the highest quality standards. HR professionals and subject matter experts review each product to ensure accurate, real-life applications. In addition, SHRM® programs are "living documents" - improvements and revisions are included in each reprint to incorporate the latest changes in HR practices and legislation. The SHRM® Learning System is developed in partnership with the Holmes Corporation, one of the nation's leading instructional design, development and distribution firms.
At the conclusion of each course, participants will receive a personal certificate. Please note: Tuition does not cover registration for the PHR or SPHR examination. SHRM® Learning System Course (36 hours)*
A SHRM® Learning System Course sponsored by Eastern Connecticut State University for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM®) is being offered for Fall 2008.
Through discussions between the area SHRM® affiliate and the School of Continuing Education's Office of Professional Development, the need for a quality certificate program for human resource professionals in the region was identified. Such a program would be valuable for people in the human resource field.
Course Description
This 12-week (three hours per week) certificate program will be offered each fall and spring. The course, taught by instructors who have been selected by the School of Continuing Education's Office of Professional Development, is intended to serve as a preparation class for the Human Resource Certification Institute's SPHR national examination.
Topics covered will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Strategic Management
- Lawmaking and administrative regulatory processes.
- Strategic planning and implementation.
- Organizational social responsibility (i.e. welfare to work, philanthropy, alliances with community-based organizations).
- Management functions, including planning, organizing, directing, and controlling.
- Techniques to sustain creativity and innovation.
Workforce Planning and Employment
- Federal/state/local employment related laws and immigration laws
- Quantitative analyses required to assess past and future staffing needs (i.e., cost benefit analysis, costs-per-hire, selection ratios, adverse impact).
- Recruitment methods and sources
- Staffing alternatives (for example, telecommuting, outsourcing).
- Reliability and validity of selection tests/tools/methods.
- Interviewing techniques
- Impact of compensation and benefits on recruitment and retention.
Human Resource Development
- Application international, federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding copyrights to patents.
- Human resource development theories and applications (including career development and leadership development).
- Organizational development theories and applications.
- Training methods, programs, and techniques (designs, objectives, methods, etc.)
- Employee involvement strategies.
Compensation and Benefits
- Federal, state, and local laws compensation and benefit laws (i.e., FLSA, ERISA, COBRA).
- Accounting practices related to compensation and benefits (i.e., excess group term life, compensory time).
- Job evaluation methods.
- Job pricing and pay structures.
- Incentive and variable pay methods.
- Executive compensation.
- Benefit plans (i.e., health insurance, life insurance, pension, education, health club).
Employee and Labor Relations
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws affecting employment in union and non-union environments, such as anti-discrimination laws, sexual harassment, labor relations and privacy.
- Individual employment rights issues and practices (i.e., employment-at-will, negligent hiring, defamation, employee' rights to bargain collectively).
- Workplace behavior issues/practices (i.e., absenteeism, discipline).
- Unfair labor practices.
Occupational Health, Safety and Security
- Federal, state, local workplace health and safety laws and regulations (i.e., OSHA, Drug-Free work place act, ADA).
- Workplace injury and occupational illness compensation laws and programs (i.e., workers' compensations).
- Investigation procedures of workplace safety, health and security enforcement agencies (i.e., OSHA).
- Potential violent behavior and workplace violence conditions.
The materials used will be the official SHRM® Learning System Program, a modular training program published by Holmes Corporation. Class participants will receive a certificate of completion from SHRM® at their completion of the course.
Please be advised that if more than two SHRM® classes are missed, certificates of completion can not be issued.
