The Center for Community Engagement facilitates several special events per semester with community partners and the campus community. Special Events registration will take place one month prior to the scheduled event.

Friends of Ashford Library Wine Tasting

September 16, 2017 from 1:00 to 6:00 PM

Volunteers will assist with coordination of a wine tasting fundraiser to benefit the Friends of Ashford by setting up decorations, coordinating drivers in the parking lot, and helped serve food to the attendants.

Blood Drive Recruitment Tables

September 18-21, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Volunteers will assist with recruitment tables to sign up blood donors for the next blood drive. Tables will be set up in Webb Lobby (Monday 18th), Science Lobby (Tuesday 19th), and Student Center (Wednesday 20th &Thursday 21st).

Blood Drive

September 25 and 26, 2017 from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM

This 2-day blood drive is one of 4 for the academic year. The drive is open to students, faculty and staff as well as community residents. The blood is donated to area hospitals and medical facilities by the American Red Cross. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up and break down, check in, canteen and donor relations.

CT Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry

September 26, 2017 from 12:30 to 2:15 PM

Connecticut Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry is located at the First Congregational Church of Willimantic. The Mobile Food Pantry Program is an outreach program designed to bring food directly to neighborhoods where low income people lack access to food assistance programs or supplement the efforts of existing food assistance programs that cannot provide enough food to meet the growing need. Eastern volunteers assist with food distribution on the 4th Tuesday of each month. A separate registration is required for each month.

2017 Day of Caring

September 30, 2017 from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM

The Day of Caring is a large-scale community clean-up event sponsored by the United Way of Central and Northeastern CT. Eastern volunteers and University of Connecticut volunteers will spread out across the region to rake, plant, create literacy kits for children, sort school supplies which have been donated and more. T-shirts and lunch will be provided. All Eastern volunteers will meet at the Clock Tower at 8:30 am.

Downtown Country Fair

September 30, 2017 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

The Downtown Country Fair is a community event sponsored by the Willimantic Food Coop . Volunteers are needed to help with set up and break down, and assisting vendors with their tables.

Relay for Life of Greater Windham

October 14, 2017 from 9 AM to 12 NOON

The Relay for Life of Greater Windham County is a large community event that supports cancer research, prevention and survivors. Students will create a team or join an existing team and raise money for the cause. Volunteers will also be needed to support the event which runs from 11 am to 11 pm on Saturday. Students are encouraged to form a team by going to www.relay.acsevents.org. Students can also volunteer for the event here. Volunteer jobs include helping with the Gear Store, luminaria sales, silent auction, children’s activities, set up and clean up.

CT River Valley Apple Harvest Festival

October 15, 2017 from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM

Each year the Glastonbury Apple Harvest Festival is rated as one of the best annual events in the entire state.This year promises to be the biggest and best in the festival’s storied history.The Apple Harvest Festival brings 17,000 people to Glastonbury for three days of food, rides, crafts (2-days), entertainment and apple pies. Volunteers are essential for a successful event. Give us a few hours of your time and not only will you receive an Apple Harvest Festival “Yowie”, you will have fun! Jobs include assisting with set up and break down, ticket sales, Apple Pie Booth (yum) and Festival Patrol.

Volunteers must register on the Harvest Festival’s volunteer site. Once you register through the CCE you will be given the link and can select the volunteer assignment you prefer. Transportation will be provided at the beginning and end of each day. Community members are also volunteering at this event, so register early to get your preferred assignment.

Health, Wellness and Benefits Expo

October 17, 2017 Set Up at 7:00 AM and Break Down at 4:00 PM

The Health, Wellness and Benefits Expo needs volunteers to help vendors carry in their supplies from the parking area to the Betty Tipton Room, and then to help break down at the end of the event.

Third Grade Research Buddies

The library has  an outreach project with Windham Public Schools. Eastern volunteers would serve as research buddies in the library helping third grade students find books that will inspire a drawing.  The drawings will be exhibited at the Kerri Art Gallery at a later date. Third grade classes will come on different days: October 17 & 24. Pizza lunch will be provided. Volunteers need to be somewhat familiar with library, therefore come early or prior to event to learn your way around the library. Sign up for one or both shifts.

Malloween at East Brook Mall

October 28, 2017 from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM

This is a Halloween event at East Brook Mall. Volunteers will run Halloween activities for kids and are encouraged to dress in child-appropriate Halloween costumes.

Halloween Trick a Trunk at Mansfield Community Center

October 28, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM

Halloween event for local children, volunteers needed for set up and break down as well as to help staff booths for the children. Volunteers are encouraged to dress in child-appropriate Halloween costumes.

Trick or Treat on Main Street

October 31, 2017 from 3:30 to 6:30 PM

Volunteers are needed at the major Halloween event in Windham. The coordinators are expecting 3,000 kids! Volunteers can hand out candy, help with the flashlight egg hunt, the jackolantern jaunt, or help run candy reinforcements! Volunteers are asked to dress in kid-appropriate costumes. All volunteers will meet at Jillson Square and are asked to look for the Windham Rec van to check in.

Every year WAIM (Windham Area Interfaith Ministry) hosts the Walk for Warmth to raise funds for their Energy Assistance Program. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, take-down, and organize kids activities at the event.

Every year WAIM (Windham Area Interfaith Ministry) hosts the Walk for Warmth to raise funds for their Energy Assistance Program. Volunteers are asked to either form a team or join a team. Each walker is asked to raise a minimum of $20.00. This registration is for walkers only, event volunteers should register for program # 10310.

Day of Giving Community Celebration

November 22, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Eastern will provide its 9th annual Thanksgiving meal in Hurley Hall to community members who would otherwise go without a Thanksgiving meal. Volunteers help with transportation, greeting guests, transporting food from the kitchen, serving, and clean up. Volunteers must be able to stay for the entire time. Note that only residents living in residence halls with kitchens may participate as residence halls close the night before for the holiday and no food services are available.
