Americorps

The Corportation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that helps more than 5 million Americans improve the lives of their fellow citizens through service. AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a program whose members live and serve in the nation’s poorest urban and rural areas. They work to create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

Since its inception in fall 2009, the Center for Community Engagement has hosted 9 AmeriCorps*VISTAs. They have helped to build sustainable community partnerships, facilitate large-scale special events, as well as recruit and train Eastern volunteers to work with community organizations in Willimantic.

As of fall 2014, the Center for Community Engagement is a host site for Jumpstart, a national early education organization funded by the CNCS. Jumpstart recruits and trains college students and community Corps members to serve preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Corps members serve 300 hours in an academic year and receive an education award that can be used for tuition or federal loans.
