Knight Gatherings and More
The Foundation for Campus Ministry (FCM) is a multi-faith organization dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the University community. Currently there are Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, and Roman Catholic groups and clergy that are active on campus. The dedicated clergy of the FCM are from local faith communities and offer spiritual support and programming for the students, staff and faculty at Eastern. Knight House Multi-faith Center at 2 Windham Street Extension is the home of the Foundation for Campus Ministry. Groups representing several different faith traditions meet there throughout the week for prayer and study.
A well established Campus Ministry program is the Thursday Knight Café which opened in Knight House in 2004 to meet the social needs of students. The Café is sponsored by Campus Ministry, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Student Affairs Office of Wellness Promotion. It has grown so much that now it is held in the Student Center Café, and is a place where students can watch movies; play games; sing Karaoke; or listen to music, poetry, dramatic readings, and live entertainment. It is a chemical-free environment (no smoking, drinking, or drugs). Punch and snacks are provided free of charge. Our late-night pancakes are legendary.
Campus Ministry has partnered with the Office of Student Affairs and the Center for Community Engagement in organizing the Red Cross Blood Drives that are held at Eastern. We are proud that Eastern students and faculty have consistently outperformed the other state universities. We have many more blood donors as a percentage of our population. The Red Cross Blood Drives scheduled for 2016-2017 are September 26 & 27, December 5 & 6, February 6 & 7 and April 3 & 4.
Campus Ministry and the Center for Community Engagement are sponsoring an “Alternative Spring Break” this year from March 12-17, 2017. It is a trip to New York City to work in soup kitchens. The cost is $505 which includes transportation, lodging, 6 meals, sightseeing and a Broadway show. Come to an informational meeting on 9/20 at 4 pm or 9/21 at 3 pm in Room 223 in the Student Center.
FCM continually looks for new and meaningful ways to minister to the individuals and community at Eastern. The campus ministers look forward to sharing questions, problems and insights that naturally surface as one expands personal horizons through education. If you would like to talk to a campus minister, have ideas for programming, or would like to participate in the work of Campus Ministry, please call 423-0856.
