  Minor: Social Informatics

Intent of the Social Informatics (SI) Minor is the following:

  • The SI minor deals with the utilization, organization and control of information systems in society, in non-profit and non-business organizations. Its focus is on the interdisciplinary study of the design, uses and consequences of information technologies that takes into account their interaction with institutional and cultural contextual environment.
  • Through the elective course within the minor students get an opportunity to deepen their understanding of using information technology in one of three important areas: sociology, social work, environmental management or sustainable energy. A student will be able, upon completing the minor, to use information systems to collect and analyze data needed to enhance the productivity of medium and small organizations, governmental and non- profit agencies.
  • It requires 15 credits and is suitable for any Eastern Connecticut State University student, including transfer and non-traditional students studying through the School of Continuing Education.

NOTE: At least four of the courses below should be taken at Eastern Connecticut State University.

Required courses:

  1. Three core courses, taken in the following sequence (9 credits):
    • BUS 205 - Information Management
    • BIS 364 - Introduction to Social Informatics - (Prereq: Bus 205)
    • BIS 370 - Systems Analysis and Design - (BUS 205 or BIS 361 suggested)
  2. Two elective courses - one from Group A and one from Group B (6 or 7 credits)
    1. One of these BIS courses:
      • BIS 361 - Business Information Systems and Web Technologies (3 cr.)
      • BIS 365 - Emerging Technologies and Business Applications (3 cr.)
      • BIS 367 - Human Computer Interfaces (3 cr.)
      • BIS 375 - Electronic Commerce (3 cr.)
      • BIS 377 - Organizational Website and Database Management (4 cr.)
      • BIS 430 - Enterprise Resource Planning (3 cr.)
      • BIS 440 - Business Data Communication and E-Networks (3 cr.)
      • BIS 447 - Business Intelligence and Data Solutions (3 cr.)
      • BIS 462 - Seminar in Healthcare Informatics (3 cr.)
    2. One third level course from the following list:
