On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 5:00 pm, nine students majoring in Business Information Systems were inducted into the Connecticut Alpha Chapter of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) Honor Society for disciplines of computer science and information systems in Science Building Room 301. Seven students pursuing majors in Computer Science were also inducted at the ceremony. Special guest speakers at the event included ECSU President Eliza Nunez; Dean Carmen Cid of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dean Jacob Easily of the School of Education and Professional Studies. Also present to congratulate the new inductees was ECSU Provost Rhona Fee as well as the Business Information Systems and Computer Science faculty and numerous parents, family and friends of the students. ECSU was the first university in Connecticut to establish an honor society chapter under the national auspices of the Association of Computer Machinery.

On Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 5:00 pm in the Johnson Room of the ECSU Kelvin Smith Library, eighteen students pursuing majors in the Department of Business Administration were inducted into the ECSU Chapter of Delta Mu Delta Honor Society. To be inducted in the honor society, students must have cumulative GPAs in the top twenty percent of their cohort (year in school) across the Department of Business Administration. Special guest speakers at the induction ceremony included: ECSU Provost Rhona Free, Department of Business Administration Chairperson Branko Cavarkapa.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in the Betty Tipton Room of the ECSU Student Center, approximately two hundred alumni and students of the ECSU Accounting Program as well as faculty attended the 15th Annual Accounting Banquet. Featured guest speakers include xxx and xxx who spoke on the topics of yy. Multiple scholarships were also awarded at the banquet to current Accounting Program students. Recipients included the following students majoring in Accounting.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 6:15 pm in Science 301 approximately 60 BIS program students attended a special event on Business Intelligence, Business Analytics and careers by Bill and Kevin (an ECSU Department of Business Administration alumni) of Travelers Insurance. They discussed the increasing importance of business intelligence and effective business data analytics. They outlined some of the various areas where business intelligence is growing in importance and usage at Travelers Insurance. They also outlined their various existing IS/IT internship programs drawing special attention to those in the area of BI/BA. Plus, Bill announced the introduction of an early “internship program” opportunity for students that are First Year and Sophomore students interested in the area of BI/BA.

Saturday, April 18 the first ECSU Cigna Sponsored Code-athon was held in the ECSU Student Center starting at 8:30 am and going until 8:30 pm. Teams of six students from multiple schools in Connecticut competed in developing web platform solutions to a problem statement in the area of health insurance. At the end of the evening each team presented their recommend solution as well as the system they built. A panel of judges evaluated the solutions on a number of measures. The ECSU AITP Team consisting of (Jeremy, Ivan, Kyle, Matt, Mike, and Patrick) finished first followed by a team from UConn. For finishing in first place, each team member received a new laptop computer.)

Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18, 2015, the first annual CREATE Conference was held on the ECSU campus. There were forty-three department students presenting their research at the conference either through research posters and/or research presentations. Students under the supervision of Dr. Pandey, Dr. Grandhi, Dr. Kunene, Dr. Deal, and Dr. Petkov participated. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) ECSU Student Chapter sponsored a Leadership Workshop starting at 5:00 pm the evening of April 15, 2015. The main speaker at the Leadership Workshop was Dr Peter B. of the ECSU Department of Psychology. Through a combination of short lectures, discussion and team/leadership building exercises students gained insights in strategies to becoming more effective leaders as well as team members. A total of around 30 ECSU students participated in this limited seating event.

Thursday, April 2, 2015 in Science 301 from noon until 1:00 pm, ECSU BIS Program alumni working at Cigna Insurance hosted an information session about the various IS/IT career and internship programs offered by Cigna. This included various programs in the area of project analysis and management, various leadership programs as well as the various path options in the TechDP Program for both on and off campus internships as well as post graduation career paths and positions.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, in the Gysller Gym, the ECSU Spring 2015 Career Fair was held. Approximately sixty employers were present at the fair. Numerous Department of Business Administration students attended the career fair. Multiple of the employers recruiting students for both career and internship positions had ECSU alumni recruiting the current department students for the various positions. When asked what were some of the advantages of using ECSU alumni for recruiting at the event, the employers said that the alumni were able to bridge the knowledge and communication gap between the various courses and programs at Eastern and the skills and knowledge required at their organization for the current students. They also went on to say that the alumni’s insights into the various courses and programs at Eastern also gave them keener insight into the interests and skill level of the individual ECSU students.

Dr. Paul Gilson and the Entrepreneurship Club hosted Jeffrey Cohen of Imageworks on website content management and effective strategies and approaches to the conversion funnel. This dynamic standing room only event, discussed a number of strategies and approaches to website layout and design as well as content management strategies. Jeffrey Cohen is considered one of the premier New England experts on E-Commerce content management.

On Tuesday, January 5, 2015, AITP and other students of the Department of Business Administration attended the fifth annual Get Hired Career Fair being held at the Hartford Downtown Marrotte Hotel. This career fair focuses in on careers in the finance, insurance, accounting, and information systems areas. Numerous department students in past years have landed career positions and/or internships from this Winter Break event.

On Monday, November 17, Rafael of Pfizer Pharmaseutical in New London, Connecticut (an alumni and major from the ECSU BIS Program) presented information on the various ways Business Intelligence and analytics is being used at Pfizer to BIS Program students and AITP Chapter Members. He brought out the rapid growth of this area at Pfizer and outlined some of the various internship and career opportunities in the area of BI/BA and data analysis at Pfizer. Some of those opportunities even exist in Rafael’s own department areas.

On Oct. 10th, 2013 a select group of local Accounting and Technology firms participated in the ECSU Career Fair which promoted opportunities for students to intern and land full time jobs with companies in the area seeking qualified Business and Accounting students.

On Thursday, March 21st an expert panel from Aetna enthusiastically discussed in the Paul Johnson Room “The Future of Information Technology Careers” with almost eighty students in Eastern’s Business Information Systems and Computer Science programs. Having on campus guests from a leading health insurance provider is important given the fact that our Healthcare Informatics minor was the first program in this field when launched two years ago.
Marketing majors were inducted into the Alpha Mu Alpha honor society in April. The society is committed to the advancement of excellence in the field of marketing and recognizes senior undergraduates who have a marketing concentration in the Department of Business Administration and hold a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
The UPE Honor society ceremony for Business Information Systems and Computer Science students was held in April.
Business majors were inducted into Delta Mu Delta, the international honor society for business administration in April. The society recognizes academic excellence of students in a community that fosters the well-being of its members and the business community through life-time membership.
