Frederick Johnson ’78

Fred graduated from Eastern in 1978 with a degree in Environmental Earth Sciences. Upon graduation he worked in the field of environmental health while pursuing a graduate degree in environmental engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Fred is the Senior Vice President, Principal and Eastern Regional Manager for GEI consultants, Inc.   GEI is a 700-plus person, national environmental, geotechnical, structural and water resource engineering consulting company. The firm provides complex earth engineering solutions to  clients across the United States and internationally. Prior to his work for GEI consultants, Fred served as Director of Environmental Programs for United Technologies Corporation as well as for Pratt and Whitney.   He has over 35 years’ experience with all types of business and legal matters where complex environmental issues are involved. He is actively involved with several non-profit organizations including the National Academy Foundation’s Academy of Engineering and Green Technology at Harford Public High School, and the Connecticut Envirothon. Both organizations promote technical learning and career development for young adults across varied social and economic backgrounds.

“I found myself at Eastern after having to transfer out of an expensive private college due to financial reasons, said Fred.” “I found Eastern to be every bit as challenging and rewarding. I felt I was well prepared to move on to graduate school and later life.” Fred’s wife Cynthia also graduated from Eastern in 1978.
