EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY/E-CLUB
2005/2006 SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD-WINNERS

To qualify, a student-athlete must have reached junior status academically and athletically and attained an overall GPA of 3.15 (Scholar-Athlete) or 3.50 (Outstanding Scholar-Athlete).

CARRIE FLEISCHER        Jr.      W-Soccer    Back/Mid  Team Record: 12-6-2

3.96 GPA/Math                                                                Hometown: Tolland, CT

Named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Soccer Team this past fall. A member of two conference tournament championship teams and NCAA qualifiers at Eastern, Fleischer finished  third on in scoring (6-5-17 points) this year for the Warriors, who won the Little East Conference regular season and playoff titles and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament.

 

 


MEREDITH HOSKINS       Jr.       Swimming   Backstroke    Team Record: 7-6

3.51 GPA/Environmental Earth Science                 Hometown: Cumberland, RI

Three-year program member and three-time New England qualifier.  Helped lead team to its seventh consecutive winning season and sent a record-tying seven swimmers to the New England Championship.

 

 

 


JESSICA KEOGH            Jr.    Volleyball    Outside Hitter  Team Record: 28-11

3.58 GPA/Physical Education                                        Hometown: Monroe, CT

Three-year program member for team that was the Little East Conference champion and automatic NCAA tournament qualifier. Second-team All-Little East Conference selection who appeared in 129 games.   

 

 


KATIE KLINE                     Sr.    W-Basketball   Center       Team Record: 21-7

3.89 GPA/History, Social Science                       Hometown: No. Brookfield, MA

Second-year recipient of the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award.  Four-year member of the basketball program, a senior co-captain and member of the Honors Program.  She has received numerous academic awards and scholarships in her career and plans to attend George Washington University in the fall to pursue her Master’s Degree.

 


BROOK NICI                       Sr.    Softball      Pitcher/OH   Team Record: 21-19

3.80 GPA/Biology                                                            Hometown: Clinton, MA

Second-year Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. Four-year program member and one-year captain of the softball team during which time she pitched, played infield and outfield for the Warriors.  She accumulated seven wins and six losses this season, starting in 15 games with a 2.08 ERA.

 

 


CARL SEGURA                   Sr.   M-Soccer      Forward     Team Record: 8-7-1

3.83 GPA/Psychology                                                  Hometown: Amherst, MA

Received Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award  for the second year.  Was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Soccer Team this past fall.  He is a member of the national honor society for psychology majors and is Eastern’s Student Representative to the Connecticut State University Board of Trustees. A team tri-captain, Segura appeared in all 16 matches for the 8-7-1 Warriors this past fall.

 

 


KAREN TABER                      Jr.     Softball      Infielder     Team Record: 21-19

3.68 GPA/Psychology, Education                            Hometown: Deep River, CT

Three-year letterwiner.  Leadoff hitter who started all 39 games at third base for team which won a program-record 11 regular-season Little East Conference games and was the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.  Led the team in at-bats (129), runs (27), hits (38), doubles (9), triples (5), total bases (63) and assists (92) and was third in RBI (13).

 


MATTHEW ZAGURA              Jr.     Track & Field   Throws

3.55 GPA/Health and Physical Education                    Hometown: Ellington, CT

Holds the current program record in the hammer throw, which he has broken in three different meets this season, and also set the current record in the 35-pound weight this season. Outdoors, made a clean sweep by winning the Little East and New England Alliance titles in the hammer, shot put and discus and earned All-New England distinction by placing fourth in the hammer and sixth in the discus. Indoors, was named All-ECAC and All-New England in the shot put and in the 35-pound weight and won conference and alliance championships in both events. Helped Eastern win the indoor conference and alliance championships, as well as the outdoor conference championship.

 

 

ECSU/E-CLUB SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD-WINNERS (12)


ROB BEDINI                         Sr.       M-Soccer     Back      Team Record: 8-7-1

3.17 GPA/Political Science                                     Hometown: Manchester, CT

Two-year member of program after transferring from Division I Marist College.  One of only two players to start all 16 matches this year, helping the team win three of its final four matches to finish over the .500 mark. Fifth on the team by averaging 71.8 minutes per match.

 

 


CAITLIN BUZZELL               Sr.    W-Soccer   Forward    Team Record: 12-6-2

3.39 GPA/Psychology                                             Hometown: Manchester, CT

Two-year member of the soccer program which was the Little East Conference regular-season and playoff champion and NCAA tournament qualifiers this fall.  Repeated all-conference honors, earning first-team accolades this year after a being a second-team pick in 2004. Appeared in all 20 matches, with 19 starts and was second on the team in goals (11) and points (27) and tied for third in assists (5).

 


PAT KOZLOSKI                   Jr.     M-Soccer      Midfield     Team Record: 8-7-1

3.25 GPA/Education                                                        Hometown: Oxford, CT

Third-year of the soccer program.  One of two players to start all 16 matches, was first in minutes played (1,358), and third with an average of 84.9 minutes per match. Had a goal and two assists.

 

 


SEAN KUKUCKA            Jr.     Baseball    Third Base   Current Record: 24-16

3.43 GPA/Business                                                        Hometown: Vernon, CT

Third-year member of the program who is lettering with the varsity for the first time. Heading into the Little East Conference tournament, had appeared in 24 games with 14 starts, batting .250 with 28 assists.

 

 


MELISSA LAMBERT         Jr.     W-Soccer    Back          Team Record: 12-6-2

3.49 GPA/Psychology                                                   Hometown: Montville, CT

Third-year member of the soccer program which was the conference regular-season and playoff champions and NCAA tournament qualifier this past fall.  Was named for the second time to the all-conference team, earning second-team accolades after being a first-team pick as a sophomore. Appeared in all 20 matches, starting 19 and leading the team in minute played (1,696) and average minutes (84.8).

 


ZACH MEHRBACH            Sr.    Baseball         Infield        Team Record: 24-16

3.22 GPA/Communication                                               Hometown: Lyme, NH

Fourth-year member of the program and a 2006 senior captain. Little East Conference Player-of-the-Year selection, first-team All-New England Region, second-team All-ECAC and first-team all-conference as a junior. Heading into the Little East Conference tournament, was limited to 20 games due to a fractured right wrist, batting .269 with 52 assists.

 

 


DAVID PAVIA                     Sr.     M-Track & Field    Sprints/Jump                       

3.44 GPA/Sport & Leisure Management                     Hometown: Stamford, CT

Second-year scholar-athlete award-winner. One of the most versatile athletes in program history. This year, he has run in the 55, 60, 100, 200, 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays and competed in the long jump and triple jump. Indoors, was named All-New England at 55 meters and with the 4x400 relay. At the New England outdoor championship, was named All-New England at 100 meters and as part of the 4x100 relay.  

 


JESSICA PRZYGOCKI          Jr.      W-Track & Field    Sprints

3.26 GPA/Accounting                                                      Hometown: Bristol, CT

Three-time program letterwinner.  Ran the 200 and 400 meters indoors and outdoor at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championship and was also a member of the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays.

 

 

 


MICHELLE READ                 Jr.      W-Soccer      Back    Team Record: 12-6-2

3.43 GPA/Accounting                                               Hometown: Wallingford, CT

Third-year member of the soccer program which was the Little East Conference regular-season and playoff champion and NCAA tournament qualifiers this fall.  Started all 18 matches in which she appeared and was one of four field players to accumulate more than 1,500 minutes (1,506) and was second by averaging 83.7 minutes per game. Contributed two assists.

 

 


GREG SULLIVAN          Sr.       Baseball      Outfielder      Team Record: 24-16

3.22 GPA/Communication                                          Hometown: Needham, MA

Fourth-year varsity letterwinner and 2006 team tri-captain. Seeing fulltime duty this year in left  field – the third different position of  his career – and as the team’s leadoff hitter. Heading into the Little East Conference tournament, was batting .294 with 22 runs scored, 53 total bases and 11 stolen bases.

 

 

 


ALLISON SUMECKI           Jr.     W-Soccer    Goalie        Team Record: 12-6-2

3.33 GPA/Physical Education                                     Hometown: Northford, CT

Four-year letterwinner who was a second-year starter in net last fall on the Little East Conference regular-season and playoff champion and NCAA qualify. Appeared ain all 20 matches, with 18 starts and a 1.04 goals-against average and .839 save percentage. Had 5.9 shutouts. Tied her career-high of ten saves in the first round game of the NCAA tournament.

 


LAURA TIGNONSINI      Sr.     W-Track & Field    Hurdles/Sprints/Pole/Vault

3.40 GPA/Health & Physical Education                         Hometown: Vernon, CT

This year, Tignonsini was also the recipient of the prestigious Bonnie J. Edmondson SportsPerson-of-the-Year Award and also shared the Holly E. Zimmerman Memorial Award.  She was a four-year member of the indoor and outdoor track programs and a four-year member of the cross country team. In track, she competed in the 55, 60, 100 and 400 meter hurdles and at 200, 400, 500 and 600 meters, in the pole vault, javelin and triple jump and on the relays.
