Following a six-year absence, Scott Smith of Rockville returned to the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball coaching staff as an assistant to head coach Bill Holowaty in 2011.
A catcher, Smith played at Eastern in the spring of 1989, then spent the next 15 seasons as an assistant coach under Holowaty – the first three as a student-coach. Prior to returning to the Eastern dugout, Smith served under Bill Decker as an assistant coach at Trinity College for three seasons beginning in 2008.
Smith has been an assistant coach on four NCAA Division III national championship teams – three (1990, 1998, 2002) at Eastern and one (2008) at Trinity. Nine of those teams at Eastern and Trinity captured regional championships and participated in national tournaments.
A former assistant program director for Bill Holowaty’s Fundamental Baseball Camp, Smith also served as field manager in 2000 and later as an assistant coach for the Manchester Silkworms – a former entry in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) – and previously served as head coach with the Rockville American Legion.
Smith resides in Vernon with wife Dianne, sons Kevin and Nicholas, and daughter, Kelly.
