The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is kicking off a new year. With both familiar and new faces on board, SAAC is looking forward to the upcoming 2005/2006 year.

Along with its athletic events, SAAC will also be conducting multiple community service activities as the year progresses. The committee will be kicking off its community service with the Haunted Happening, a celebration of Halloween scheduled for Friday, Oct. 28. They will also be participating in the March of Dimes as well as a “Kids Night Out” in the spring where kids are able to play games with the athletes.

SAAC is a student-led group made up of representatives from each varsity athletic team. Meetings are held twice a month and are centered on the student athletes’ concerns or questions. The group discusses policies and procedures, as well as plans community-based activities. SAAC is designed to be a direct link between Eastern’s 300 student-athletes and the athletic staff. It provides the students an opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns about the athletic program, in an effort to improve the program.

Each year, SAAC sets out to attain pre-determined goals. Those goals: to improve the overall athletic experience for student-athletes, to enhance the image of the athletic department, to serve as a liaison between the student athletes and athletic department, as well as to plan and conduct at least one community service activity per semester.

Following the May graduation of former President Andrew Bessette, the Committee is under the direction of President David Walberg, a four-year member of SAAC from Blackstone, MA. Walberg is  a senior as well as a four-year member of the men’s soccer team. The Vice President is  senior Jessica Roberts of Westbrook, a four-year member of the field hockey team. The Secretary/Treasurer will be Nikki Vachon of East Haddam, a junior softball player. The advisor of SAAC is Assistant Athletic Director Janice Patry. These officers are joined by 25 additional dedicated student-athletes who are are extremely involved in addressing important issues.

Among the events planned for this year is the Haunted Happening on October 28. Just in time for Halloween, SAAC plans this event for children ages 2 to 12 as a celebration of the holiday. With tricks and treats, everyone will also be treated to two costume parades, arts, crafts, games and activities. The event will be held at the Eastern Sports Center from 6 to 8 p.m.
