Jazz Orchestra: All Blues
With Mark Harvey, Music Director
November 11, 2013 7 p.m.
Hailed for “awe-inspiring audience fascination” (“Downbeat”) and “exuberance, imagination and sheer brio” (“Jazz Review” UK), the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, now in its 41st season, is one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world. The legendary band returns to Eastern with a show of “All Blues,” from the iconic Miles Davis tune “All Blues,” to Charles Mingus’ “Pork Pie Hat” (a tribute to fellow musician Lester Young), to a jaunty selection from Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder.” A high point will be the world premiere of Mark Harvey’s “Merry Go Round,” featuring the Eastern Concert Chorale (David Belles, director) and the Eastern Thread City Jazz Ensemble (Joe Tomanelli, director). Aardvark members are: Arni Cheatham, Peter H. Bloom, Phil Scarff, Chris Rakowski and Dan Zupan, saxophones and woodwinds; K.C. Dunbar and Jeanne Snodgrass, trumpets; Bob Pilkington and Jay Keyser, trombones; Jeff Marsanskis and Bill Lowe, bass trombones and tuba; Richard Nelson, guitar; John Funkhouser, string bass; Harry Wellott, drums; Jerry Edwards, vocalist; and Mark Harvey, trumpet/music director.
