Art and Art History
The Art & Art History Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts with five concentrations of study: Art History, Digital Art and Design, Painting and Drawing, Printmaking and Sculpture. Students learn to think visually as they study different media, become familiar with visual language, acquire knowledge of expressive techniques, and learn the context of the art of different cultures. Students become skilled at articulating the conceptual and aesthetic relevance of works of art, and build their repertoire of necessary professional skills within their discipline of choice.
Program graduates pursue advanced degrees or other courses of study, and/or become professional artists, graphic designers in print or new media, painters, printmakers, sculptors or professionals in art galleries and museums.
Practical, hands-on experience is a vital component of the Visual Arts program. Sculpture students have produced masks and printmaking students have created printed fabric for theatre productions. Painting students have painted outdoor murals (Lego Corporation). In the Museums and Exhibitions course, students generate exhibition concepts and then plan, research, design and install them. Graphic design students created posters for the Last Green Valley’s Green Lights Initiative. Seniors in the Eastern Design Group form a design agency and produce professional design products for local clients such as the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, Mountain Dairy, Willimantic Wildlife Habitat, Scotch Hill Farm (New York), Windham Garden Club, The Windham Textile and History Museum (Annual Snow Ball), Town of Windham (Third Thursday and Seasonal Banners) and Windham Hospital (Annual Fundraising Event).
