Foundation President’s Message

A Message from the Foundation President

Dear Alumni and Friends of Eastern:

JustinMurphyThank you! Once again, thanks to you, total giving to the ECSU Foundation, Inc., exceeded $2 million for the sixth straight year! As a result of your benevolence, the Foundation has been able to award $2.1 million in scholarships over the past four years and we are projected to award a record $700,000 in scholarships for fiscal year 2019.

The percentage of alumni that donate to their alma mater can be seen as an indication of their level of satisfaction and a measure of how much they value the education that they have received. Since Dr. Nunez arrived at Eastern twelve (12) years ago, the percentage of alumni making gifts has grown from three percent (3%) to nine percent (9%). While this may seem low, it is the highest giving percentage among Connecticut’s four state universities, and higher than private institutions such as the University of Hartford, Sacred Heart University and Quinnipiac University.

In addition to having supportive alumni and friends, Eastern is fortunate to have great leadership. Thanks to Dr. Nunez and the faculty and staff at Eastern, the University entered the ranks of the top 25 universities in the North Region for the first time in last fall’s U.S. News and World Report “Best Colleges” rankings. Eastern was also the only public institution in New England named a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education, and was named a Green College by The Princeton Review for the eighth year in a row.

Despite your incredible generosity and the fact that the Foundation has added 52 new endowed scholarships totaling $6.7 million since Dr. Nunez arrived on campus, the need for your support continues. The availability of financial aid has not kept pace with increased costs and decreases in State aid. As result, many talented, deserving students still struggle financially to stay in school on a full-time basis. If you have not had a chance to make your gift in FY18, it isn’t too late. Remember that gifts of all sizes are appreciated.

On behalf of all the members of the ECSU Foundation, I want to express our appreciation for your continued support of Eastern. We are proud to report that In FY17 the external audit by Cohn Reznick again resulted in an unqualified opinion due to the careful attention to detail by the Foundation staff and management.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
