All Eastern students must successfully complete appropriate Liberal Arts curriculum courses in mathematics and writing as part of their bachelor degree program requirements.  Students are placed in math and writing courses appropriate to their skill level at the time of enrollment at the university.

MATH PLACEMENT

Placement into the appropriate math course(s) is based upon the highest SAT or ACT math score submitted as part of the admission process.  Math course placement is based on the following:

Students are notified of their math placement after admission to the university. We strongly recommend students placed in MAT 098, MAT 101, MAT 101W to STUDY and register to take the Accuplacer test. If your Accuplacer test results place you in a higher course, your math course placement will be changed accordingly. For information on the Accuplacer test, please visit the mathematics placement information website at: http://nutmeg.easternct.edu/mathematics/mathplacement.html

The link below is a sample test that will help you prepare for the Accuplacer test. This sample test is closely related to the types of questions on the Accuplacer Test http://www.easternct.edu/mathematics/mathplacement.html#istherea

Transfer students who have taken the equivalent of MAT 098 (Elementary Algebra) with a C- or above,  may register for MAT 101. Students who have taken an equivalent of MAT 101 with a C- or above ( Intermediate Algebra) may take a Math  Liberal Arts Curriculum (MAT LAC) course. Transfer students who have taken a course equivalent to MAT 135 (Math for Liberal Arts), MAT 130 (PreCalculus), MAT 139 (Number Systems) or  MAT 243( Calculus I) have already completed their Math requirement. Submit an official transcript(s) for any transfer credit course work with a C- or above .

WRITING PLACEMENT

Eastern students are required to write an essay to confirm placement in the appropriate first-year writing course. The deadline to submit a writing placement essay online for Fall 2012 was May 10, 2012.

The expectation is that students will complete their placement requirements on campus this summer or fall. There will be placement test sessions in July, August and during the Fall 2012 semester. Dates will be posted to the page found here

Please note that half of Eastern's incoming students will take their first-year writing course in Spring 2013. Therefore, if students attend a future on-campus writing placement test session this summer or fall, they can be certain that they will be able to take the appropriate college writing course in the spring.
