Clinical Internship Program

The OAS Clinical Internship Program

The Office of AccessAbility Services (OAS) at Eastern Connecticut State University, located in Willimantic, Connecticut, offers an internship site for graduate students in training to be professional counselors.

The current OAS staff consists of a licensed psychologist who also serves as Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), one licensed clinician, one consulting licensed clinician, and two part-time masters-level university assistants. The center has the capacity to hire and supervise two graduate student interns who play a key role in developing and implementing student support programs as well as carrying out the accommodations process. Interns will provide administrative support and will serve as academic counselors in individual and group sessions with students.

The OAS serves a population of over 300 full-time and part-time students who present with a wide range of disabilities that span the continuum of severity from fairly mild to severe. Psychiatric disabilities particularly common in this setting include pervasive developmental disorders, attention deficit disorders, adjustment disorders, and anxiety disorders that can be triggered from the stress of transitioning from a high school to a college setting. Students can be seen in both long term and short term individual counseling as well as in group counseling and workshops. Interns will also conduct intake interviews and participate in the accommodations process, among other office operations. In addition, each intern will be required to receive a minimum of one hour of individual supervision per week with his or her individual clinical supervisor.

There are also opportunities for educational programming, consultation, and other types of outreach and collaboration with various student services on campus such as Counseling and Psychological Services, the Office of Housing and Residential Life, and Center for Internships and Career Development. These additional training activities may be adapted to the intern’s particular interests.

This unpaid training program runs year-round.
