Dr. Joshua Idjadi, assistant professor of biology, and senior biology majors Sarah Solois and David Stein traveled to Moorea, an island 10 miles northwest of Tahiti, to conduct underwater experiments within the coral reefs. Their trip followed a similar trip to Moorea by Idjadi and senior biochemistry major Nick Shoenfelt in January 2010. The field study included underwater snorkeling and laboratory work on site. Stein, Solois and Idjadi are now analyzing samples they brought back to campus to determine which coral species are the strongest. With global warming and other conditions threatening the world’s coral reefs, such research can help ensure the future of the ocean’s eco-systems.
