American Association Of University Professors
Eastern Connecticut State University Chapter
As a full or part-time faculty member at a CSU campus, you are automatically a member of the CSU-AAUP bargaining unit. You are protected by the AAUP-CSU BOT Collective Bargaining Agreement and have full access to the governance and grievance procedures, protection of academic freedom, etc. You have the right to recommend changes in and to vote on negotiated contracts, and you receive local and state newsletters. But unless you sign a membership form, you are not a member of the local and national AAUP organizations.
Only members of CSU-AAUP receive the national AAUP publication Academe, and have the right to vote in local, state and national AAUP elections, as well as hold office in our association. In addition, members have access to a wide variety of benefits and services, such as life insurance, professional liability insurance, travel plans, automobile rentals, tires, etc., at significantly reduced rates.
Periodically you will be sent information concerning AAUP's use of AAUP membership dues (or agency fees for non-members). These expenses will be divided into two parts: A) The expenses necessary or reasonably incurred for the purpose of performing duties as exclusive representatives of the faculty, e.g., for collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance adjustment, and B) expenses not falling within category A, e.g., for ideological or political expenditures unrelated to collective bargaining, or for providing services available only to members. The report will be divided into these two categories, and the majority of the expenditures will be spent in category A. This report is usually sent at the end of November of each calendar year.
Dues for members and agency fees for non-members are currently identical, 1% of the gross annual salary, deducted biweekly from everyone's paycheck. As a non-member, if you notify CSU-AAUP in writing that you object to having a portion of your agency fee used for category B expenses, we will reduce your fee proportionately and reimburse you the difference.
We, of course, encourage you to join us as a full member in our organization and to participate fully in the university life through the union. If you have any questions, please send email to our ECSU-AAUP office or call at (860)-465-5153.
